The vine-leaf The bunch The bud

It is a vine which is obtained at the end of the Thirties by Prof. G. Dalmsaao by crossing Italic Riesling and Furmint vines. Studies about its ampelographic, productive, and oenological charactgeristics were deepened only in the Sixties and in the Seventies (Curzel, 1965; Eynard 1966). The CVT signed up this vine for the Grapevine Variety National Catalogue in 1977. Further studies carried out in the Nineties by the CVT, also in collaboration with the Tenuta Cannona Regional Experimental Company, allowed to post a request to the related State Department in 2000 for the insertion of Bussanello vine in the list of the vines which are recommended for the provinces of Alessandria, Asti, and Cuneo.

Cultural attitudes and utilization

Vigour: between medium and good.
Fertility and production:
moderate but constant; femminelle fertility is modest. Plant-culture and pruning: it is suitable for counter-espalier and mixed pruning (Guyot).
Multiplication behaviour:
good with the most common grafts.
Susceptibility to adversities and phytopathy:
medium to oidium and peronospora; in some years compact grapes may be subjected to grey mould. Its health status as far as viral diseases is good.
Oenological attitudes:
to optimize the oenological powers of this vine it is necessary to cultivate Bussanello vine in a hilly environment with a good exposition to the sun. In this case Bussanello wines are characterized by an accentuated alcoholicity, which is accompanied by gustative fullness and persistence, which are combined with a right acidity. Its good structure suggests the possibility that Bussanello wines may be suitable for ageing. In young wines the colour evidences a pleasant chromaticity (intense pale yellow, with green reflections) but rarely tends to golden. The components of its smell are particularly interesting in Bussanello wine: they evidence fine and very much intense floral and fruity aromas (jasmine, pear and red apple).
