The vine-leaf The bunch The bud

It used to be called “Bianchetto” or “Bianchetta” (from Alba) and “White Nebbiolo”.

Geographic distribution

In Piedmontese Roero and Langhe (province of Cuneo). Outside of Piedmont, it is present in Sardinia, where the cultivation is authorized in any province.

Morphological characters

Bud: cotton apex, of a greenish white colour, with slightly pink edges. Greenish white apex leaves (1-3), with slightly pink edges, inferiorly cottoned. Inferiorly lanuginose, greenish white basal leaves (4-5).
Adult leaf: of medium or medium-large size, cuneiform or pentagonal, tri-lobed or five-lobed, according to the clones; U+V or narrow V central womb; more or less profound U or V lateral wombs, often with tooth; lyre-shaped superior lateral wombs (often with a small tooth) or, in less accentuated clone leaves, V-shaped; more or less profound U- or V-shaped inferior lateral wombs. The dark green limb has a bubbly surface, clearly cup-shaped profile and slightly contorted lobes. Medium-pronounced, irregular rectilinear teeth. The inferior page has an arachnoid tomentosity on the limb and a light bristlyness at the main nerves level.
Ripened grapes: medium or medium-small size, according to the clones, cylindrical or pyramidal, with one or two short wings, short, compact; short, green peduncle.
Acinus: -                     medium-small (1,6 g), short ellipsoidal (d.e./d.l.= 0,93); very much pruinose, greenish yellow, with golden-grey shades (when exposed to the sun) peel.

Phenology

Germination: medium-precocious (within the first half of April).
Flowering: medium (between the first and the second decade of June).
Turning dark coloured: medium (second decade of August).
Grape maturation: medium-precocious or medium (third decade of September).

Cultural attitudes and utilization

Vigour: high; its robust buds have an erect carriage.
Fertility and production: medium-high and constant; it is fertile also at basal gems level; “femminelle” scarcely productive.
Plant breeding and pruning: counter-espalier with mixed pruning (Guyot), with only one capo fruiting 10-12 gems.
Multiplication behaviour: good, but inferior to other Piedmontese cultivations (affinity is not always satisfying with 41 B, 779 P and 140 Ru).
Susceptibility, adversity and phytopathy: generally little tolerant to oidium, and a little susceptible to peronospora; grapes are little subjected to grey mould and rot attacks.
Oenological attitudes: a good white wine, of good personality and fineness, with a peculiar smell, which is characterized by intense fruity sensations, full, with a moderate acidity, which mainly consists of tartaric acid. There are also withered grape vinification experiences, among which Arneis vine gives better results than “spumantization”.
