The
fine wines of the Langhe > Red/White Langhe
wine
The denomination of
“Langhe”, which was recognized by a Parliament
Decree of 22nd November 1994, is of a
territory type: it consists of the Langhe, Roero
and Monregalese vineyards, and of eight typology
of wine: red, white, Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Freisa,
Arneis, Favorita, and Chardonnay. It is to be
considered a DOC from the denominations Barolo,
Nebbiolo d’Alba, Roero, Dolcetto from Diano
d’Alba, Dolcetto d’Alba, Dolcetto from
Dogliani, Dolcetto from Langhe Monregalesi and
Roero Arneis. The denominations “White Langhe”
and “Red Langhe”, which do not indicate their
vine, can be produced from the varieties of grapes
which are authorized and recommended for the
province of Cuneo: white or red berried,
assemblage or pureness vinified. By these
denominations, also “company wines” which are
produced from mixed grapes, can find a formal and
merited recognition. Langhe Arneis, Langhe
Chardonnay, Langhe Nebbiolo, Langhe Favorita,
Langhe Dolcetto, and Langhe Freisa are other
denominations which are authorized, and which are
produced from grapes which100% come from the
homonymous vine. The typology Langhe Freisa,
Langhe Favorita, and Langhe Chardonnay can have
the mention of their grapevine on their label,
followed by the correspondent toponym, only if the
grapes totally come from the same vine, and the
maximum production per hectare is not higher than
80 quintals. It is also allowed that wines, to
become Barolo DOCG and Barbaresco DOCG, be
marketed during the ageing period with the
denomination of “Langhe” or “Langhe Nebbiolo”,
if they have the right characteristics. Langhe DOC
involved 1229 companies in 2000, and a total of
728 hectares of vineyards in an area which
includes the territories of 94 municipalities in
the province of Cuneo. Vinification is admitted
only in the area of production and the territory
of the provinces of Asti, Cuneo, and Turin, and it
is compulsory to indicate the year on the label
(except for the denomination “Langhe”, for
whom it is only a faculty). Langhe DOC is reserved
for wines which follow the characteristic and
requirements which were fixed by a regulation.
Vine: Langhe denomination, without any
specification, is reserved for red or white wines,
which are obtained from grapes coming from
vineyards which consist of one or two vines, whose
berries are of the same colour and non aromatic,
“recommended” or “authorized” for the
province of Cuneo. Langhe denomination, followed
by one of the following specifications: Nebbiolo,
Dolcetto, Freisa, Arneis, Favorita, Chardonnay, is
reserved to wines obtained from grapes coming from
vineyards which consist of the correspondent vines
exclusively. The production areas for these grapes
are: “Langhe” without specifications,
“Langhe” Nebbiolo, “Langhe” Dolcetto,
“Langhe” Freisa, “Langhe” Favorita,
“Langhe” Chardonnay. A minimum ageing is not
determined.
