The
fine wines of the Langhe > Arneis wine
Arneis wine proudly comes
from Roero hills. It is the protagonist of the
recent wine re-launching of the area. It has been
mentioned as “renexij” and “ornesio” since
1400 in some toponymic documents concerning the
municipalities of Canale and Monticello. The Roero
noble family’s cellar registers are full of
evidences of an ancient and continuous care about
this wine, which had a “vermouth” vinification
experience in the end of 1700. At the beginning of
1900, Arneis wine (sometimes called “White
Nebbiolo”) is identified with Roero hills and
records significant market successes. The popular
knowledge, through several linguistic steps,
affirmed the musical and pleasant name of
“Arneis”, which also indicates a fanciful and
rebel, original and funny person. It is almost
exclusively obtained from grapes of the same vine;
it is produced in the province of Cuneo, in the
same area of Roero DOC, which is a surface of 450
hectares (2000) and gives near 25.000 hl; the
maximum grape production per hectare is 100
quintals, and the grape maximum result into wine
is 70%; it has a minimum alcoholic content of
10,5%; it has a more or less intense pale yellow
colour, with slightly amber reflections; its smell
is delicate, fresh and herbal; its taste is dry,
pleasantly bitter and herbal; it is a wine good
for fish dishes and delicate appetizers; it is
also available as sparkling wine; Roero DOC
denomination is reserved for white and red wines
corresponding to some conditions and requirements
fixed. Vine: Roero denomination, with the
indication of Arneis vine, is reserved for wine
which is obtained from vineyards which exclusively
consist of the correspondent vine. The vine name
has to be indicated on the label, next to or
immediately below the origin denomination, with
characters whose dimension is not higher than
those utilized for the denomination of origin. The
production area consist of the Roero territories,
which are the province of Cuneo, and the
municipalities of Canale d’Alba, Corneliano
d’Alba, Piovesi d’Alba, Vezza d’Alba, and
partly the municipalities of Baldissero d’Alba,
Castagnito, Castellinaldo, Govone, Guarene,
Magliano Alfieri, Montà d’Alba, S. Stefano
Roero, Sommariva Perno. There is no ageing
considered.
